About the Sunflowers Association
Sunflowers is the only non-profit organization in Israel that provides support programs for orphans, while also acting to create national and social change and to raise awareness about orphans.
About 30,000 orphaned children and youth in Israel currently lack an established support system and framework. Orphans experience loneliness, longing for their parent, and often also economic distress. Without suitable support and assistance orphans suffer from feelings of guilt, difficulty building significant relationships, proneness to self-destructive behavior and suicide, increased risk of addiction and propensity for risky behavior. In the absence of government assistance orphans and their families find themselves alone at their most difficult time of need. Read and learn more on the articles page.
In the most recent discussion in the Knesset about orphans in the State of Israel, Knesset members Eli Alalouf and Karine Elharrar said that:
Orphans in Israel are not officially recognized by the State, lack official status, do not receive assistance and support, no one sees them or addresses their needs.
Sunflowers focuses its activity on filling this vacuum, in the aim of serving as a home for orphanhood and orphans in Israel, and on providing responses in the following three areas:
-
Sunflowers in the Community
Providing social and mental support to orphans 4-35 years of age by offering and operating four different and varied programs, as well as offering support to widows/widowers.
-
Legislation and Rights Exhaustion
Advance and advocate for legislation, policy change, and rights exhaustion for orphans and their families.
-
Awareness Raising and Information
Raise awareness about orphanhood and its ramifications, and design information programs that provide tools for those in the orphan’s environment.
Sunflowers is the only framework in Israel that provides social and emotional support and assistance to orphaned children, youth and adults. Moreover, awareness is lacking about the plight of orphans in Israel and of the critical ramifications of “untreated” orphanhood on the rest of their life. The community surrounding orphaned children and youth also lacks assistance and support in helping orphans navigate the challenges they face.
